Research use only is a supply designation, not a quality grade. It describes the intended use a material is offered for and, by implication, the evaluations it has not been through.
What the designation states
That the material is supplied for laboratory research, and that it is not a drug, a food, a cosmetic or a medical device. It has not been evaluated for safety or effectiveness in humans or animals, and no claim is made about what it does in any living system.
It is not a claim about purity. An RUO material can be extremely pure — purity is what the certificate of analysis describes, and that is a separate question entirely.
What it does not cover
An RUO designation is not a permission, an exemption or a workaround. It does not make a material appropriate for use in a person or an animal, and it does not transfer that judgement to the buyer. It states the terms on which the material was supplied — and the supply terms are the whole of it.
Why suppliers are careful about the language
The designation is bounded by how the material is marketed as much as by what it is. A compound sold with a description of what it does in a body — effects, outcomes, quantities, comparisons to medicines — is being offered for that purpose, whatever the label says. The RUO framing and the marketing have to agree, or the framing does not hold.
This is the reason a compliant catalog reads the way it does. Compound pages carry molecular weights, purity documentation, storage conditions and cost per milligram. They do not carry benefits, results, protocols or quantities. That absence is deliberate, and it is what keeps the designation meaningful rather than decorative.
What it means for you as a buyer
- Documentation describes the material, not its use. A COA establishes identity, purity and content — nothing further.
- A supplier declining to discuss use is not being unhelpful. Answering would change what the material is being offered as.
- Suitability for your specific work is your determination, from the analytical data and your own protocol.
